Willadeen “Billie” Rader, age 89 of Branch, passed away on Monday, August 25, 2014 at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.  Billie was born on November 15, 1924 in Oceana County, the daughter of John and Olga (Holtz) Teichthesen, and graduated from Montague High School with the class of 1942.  On November 11, 1944, she married Richard “Dick” Rader in Montague and they celebrated 49 years by each other’s side until Dick preceded her in death in 1993. Billie was very active in her community where she served on the Sweetwater School Board, was a member of the Order of Eastern Stars in Baldwin and Scottville, bowled on the Baldwin Bowling League for many years, and worked for Lake County Abstract Co in Baldwin for over 40 years.  Her greatest joy came in the presence of her family.  She exemplified a “Farmer’s Wife” by helping Dick on the farm wherever he needed her, milking cows, driving tractor, harvesting crops, etc…  She always looked forward to hunting season and bagging the first and biggest buck in the family every year, loved to play cards and square dance with her family and friends, and enjoyed wintering in Florida with Dick. Kathryn Louise Lyon, age 77 of Ludington, went home to Jesus on Sunday, August 31, 2014. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Richard; children, Mark (Tiffany) Lyon of Saratoga, CA., Susan (Steve) Merrill of Lowell, MI; grandchildren, Alexander and Jack Lyon, Aidan Roustan, Zachary and Mackenzie Merrill; sister, Donna J. (Glen) Murphy; and nieces and nephews. She was born on April 20, 1937 in Saginzw, MI to Glenn J. and Alberta C. Brown. Kathy graduated from Coleman High School in 1955 and went on to get her BA in music education and history from Michigan State University in 1959. She was married to Richard Chapman Lyon of Wyandotte, MI on April 9, 1960. She obtained her master’s in secondary counseling from Michigan State in 1965. Dick and Kathy moved to Ludington in 1969. Kathy worked as a high school guidance counselor for Ludington High School from 1969 until her retirement in 1993. Besides her career, Kathy was an accomplished pianist and taught piano lessons out of her home. Laura M. Lamrock aged 103 of Scottville, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.  Laura was born on November 4, 1910 in Mason County to Charles and Anna (Pleiness) Stoevsand, and attended Fern School in Eden Township.  Her first marriage was to Wilbur Matthews, and he preceded her in death in 1932.  She later married Phillip Lamrock on December 9, 1944 in Muskegon, and they celebrated 41 years together before he also preceded her in death in 1985.  Along with her husbands, Laura was preceded in death by her son Bill Matthews, her daughter Virginia (Gerald) Soberalski, her stepson Phillip Wayne Lamrock, her stepdaughter Illah (Marshall) Stoevsand, her parents, and her brothers Armen, Walt, Will, and Ervin Stoevsand. A longtime resident of Muskegon, Laura returned to Mason County following Phillip’s passing.  She loved to play cards, go to the Casino with her friends and family, and was an avid reader.  Her greatest joy was spent in the company of her family.  The y will always remember her kind and wonderful spirit. Joseph Armstrong, 84, of Dayton, OH longtime resident of Free Soil, passed away early Wednesday morning, September 17, 2014 at his Ohio home cradled by his family.  He was born on September 2, 1930, in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Robert and Velma (Smith) Armstrong, and graduated from Free Soil High School.  He was an avid sports enthusiast and devout Christian.  He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors; grilling out with family and friends; and playing and teasing his grand ones. On July 22, 1950 he married Carrine White and she survives him; along with their 6 children Lin Ward of Midland, MI, Joseph Armstrong of Cleveland Heights, OH,  Barbara Johnson of Washington Township, OH, Elizabeth Ivory of South Euclid, OH, Robert Armstrong of University Heights, OH and Mark Armstrong of Twinsburg, OH, 15 Grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his father Robert Armstrong, his mother Velma Armstrong and his one sister Mary Armstrong.   Kathlyn Marie (Pankow) Dobias, aged 94 of Scottville, passed away Saturday, October 25, 2014, at Oakview Medical Care Facility in Ludington. Kathlyn was born on May 19, 1920 in Roseville, Michigan to Ervine and Hester (Rogers) Pankow, and graduated from Roseville High School with the class of 1938. Kathlyn and her family visited Mason County often because of relatives in the area.  She met her future husband, Jim, at age 16 during one of these visits.  On Oct. 2, 1943 she married Jim Dobias at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Pelton Corners, and they have celebrated 69 years together.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her brother Ervine, and her sister Florence. Kathlyn first worked as a telephone operator in Detroit until 1942.  Her family then moved to Mason County and she began to attend Mason County Normal College.  As her children grew she returned to her education and finished her degree at C.M.U. in 1961.  Kathlyn substitute taught for Mason County Central Schools briefly and spent the rest of her career in the Ludington School District, most recently in Special Education, retiring at age 63. Mason Arial “Mutt” Tyndall aged 76 of Carr Settlement passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at his home.  Mutt was born on July 12, 1938 on the family farm to Eli and Vera (Brown) Tyndall, and graduated from Mason County Eastern High School with the class of 1957.  He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1962-1967 during the Vietnam Conflict.  Upon his discharge, he returned home to Carr Settlement where he resided and farmed until his death.  He was also a partner in Tyndall Brothers Logging until his retirement. Mutt met Myrtle “Mert” (Sorensen) Mallison in 1986, and they married on March 10, 2000 in Baldwin.  He lived the good life doing what he loved.  He could always be found in or around a field somewhere farming the land, or helping anyone with anything they needed.  He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandboys, his family, and many, many friends. Mutt was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Virgil, his sister-in-law Dorothy Tyndall, and his brother-in-law Leo Uber. Christopher “Chris” Brian Chimel, age 32 of Scottville, passed away. Chris was born on May 21, 1982 in Ludington, son of Pamela (Schramm) Chimel and the late Rick Chimel.  Chris attended Mason County Central High School and graduated with the class of 2000.  Chris worked at Solberg’s Marina in Manistee and most recently he worked at Whitehall Industries here in Ludington. Chris was a loving, kind, thoughtful person always putting others first. Family was very important to Chris and he loved spending time with them, especially his mom who he said was his best friend.  On Labor Day weekends the two of them would go to the Mackinaw Bridge to participate in the bridge walk and have done this 5 times in the last 7 years.  He loved to be outdoors, and went on many survival camping trips with his friends. The weather was so cold on some of those trips we don’t know how they survived. From a young age Chris showed a talent for drawing and was a excellent artist. Robert L. Boone Sr., aged 92 of Branch passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at his home overlooking the Pere Marquette River.  Robert was born on July 4, 1922 in Traverse City, the son of Leo and Susan (Forten) Boone, grew up in Muskegon and graduated from Muskegon High School.  He served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a B-24 Bomber pilot in the North African – Italy Theatre.  Upon his discharge, he returned to Muskegon and married Rose Mary Rogers on September 14, 1946 at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Scottville.  They have celebrated 68 years by each other’s side. Robert worked as a Pattern Maker for various companies around Muskegon, most recently Paragon Pattern & Manufacturing.  He retired in 1987 and moved to their home on the PM River in Branch where he loved to spend time hunting, fishing, gardening, and spoiling his grandsons.  Robert reunited with his bomber crew, and he and Rose have enjoyed traveling all over the United States attending their yearly reunions. Margaret Luedke, aged 90 of Summit Township, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 24, 2014 in the home of her birth.  Margaret was born on May 27, 1924, the daughter of Ralph and Atlanta (Christoffersen) Kistler, and graduated from Ludington High School with the class of 1942.  On June 29, 1944, she married George Luedke in Chicago, and they celebrated 43 years together before George preceded her in death in 1987.  Margaret was also preceded in death by her son David in 2002, her parents, and her brothers Lyle, Lee, and Vern Kistler. Margaret attended the Mercy School of Nursing in Muskegon, and worked for 20 years as a Nurse’s Aide at Paulina Stearns Hospital and later at Memorial Medical Center in Ludington.  She was a life member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Riverton, enjoyed knitting and crocheting, working on puzzles, and blessing her family with her paintings.  Living in the home of her birth, she loved caring for the family homestead and could often be seen out working in her yard. Rita Ann Johnson, age 72, of Ludington, passed away unexpectedly at home November 25, 2014. She was born on January 26, 1942 in Ludington, daughter of the late Ronald and Vera (Wagner) VanDyke.  She attended and graduated from St. Simon Catholic School.  Rita married Donald K. Johnson on November 28, 1964 in Ludington.  He preceded her in death on January 1, 2007. Rita was Riverton Township Clerk for over 30 years. She also worked as a bookkeeper for Johnson & Johnson Painting and also worked as a sales associate for Lundquist’s Furniture, where she retired from in 2009. She was a member of St. Simon Catholic Church and had a passion for sewing, knitting, cooking, building and finishing miniature dollhouses.  Most of all she absolutely loved spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren. Richard Harry Patterson, age 78 of Ludington passed away on Thursday November 27, 2014 at Spectrum Health – Ludington Hospital. He was born on September 14, 1936 in Wyandotte, son of the late Harry and Marion (Roulinson) Patterson.  When Richard was a child, his family moved from Wyandotte to a farm South of Scottville.  He attended Scottville High School and graduated with the class of 1954.  He attended Michigan State University and loved his Spartans. Richard married Edith Marie Thurow on April 4, 1959, and enjoyed almost 50 years together until she preceded him in death on August 15, 2006. Never one to sit still, Richard had many “professional lives.”  He worked for Dow Chemical and Laman Asphalt in Ludington during the 1960’s and 1970’s.  In the fall of 1982 he realized a lifelong dream of becoming a business owner.  For 25+ years he owned and operated Pere Marquette Sport Center in downtown Ludington.  During this time he served a term as President of the Chamber of Commerce.  He also started two new businesses in Ludington – Pere Marquette Bait & Beverage and a costume shop called Ludington House of Disguise. Richard “Dick” Clayton Hansen, age 89 of Owosso, formerly of Scottville passed away on Wednesday December 3, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 27, 1925 in Grant Township, son of the late John and Dagmar (Christensen) Hansen.  He graduated from Scottville High School in 1944.  Richard was a Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II, serving at Normandy and the European Theater. Richard married Beverly Stewart on December 31, 1953, they celebrated 60 years together.  He retired from the Mason County Road Commission where he worked for many years.  Richard could also be found working with Don Diesing at many auctions.  He loved fishing and hunting.  He was a lifetime member of the Eagles Lodge of Ludington where he was recently honored as a Golden Eagle. Ralph G. Zwiesler, aged 85 of Frees Soil passed away on December 15, 2014 at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. Ralph was born on October 15, 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Joseph and Ruth (Winnie) Zwiesler, attended Milford High School in Detroit, and served his country with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  Ralph worked 38 years for Packaging Corporation of America in Manistee, retiring in 1991, and was a proud member of the Paper Mill Union.  He loved to putter around his workshop making birdhouses and feeders, and was always looking for ways to improve the shop, or help out at his church, Calvary Baptist in Manistee.  His dry sense of humor will be greatly missed by his friends. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents and his sister.  He will be missed by his brother Alfred and Elaine Zwiesler of Howell, his nephew and niece, and his longtime friend and companion June Campbell of Free Soil. Shirley M. Thompson aged 82 of Scottville, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at her home.  Shirley was born on May 19, 1932, the daughter of Harry E. and Lydia (Schimke) Feldhak of Onekema, and graduated from Onekema High School with the class of 1950.  On August 15, 1953, she married Charles Thompson in Onekema, and they celebrated 44 years together before Charlie preceded her in death in 1997.  She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister Lois Baker. Shirley worked as the secretary for Mason County Central Middle School for 28 years, and was a longtime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.  As Charlie was a businessman in Scottville and involved in many civic organizations, Shirley was always by his side supporting him in his activities.  She loved to play cards and rarely missed playing with her bridge club, enjoyed searching for rare finds at yard sales, and looked forward to spending winters in Haines City, Florida with her friends. Clara Julia Malburg, aged 91 longtime resident of Scottville, passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.   Clara was born on September 20, 1923 in Mason County, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Adrieansen, and married Henry Malburg on October 4, 1941 at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Scottville.  They celebrated 56 years together before Henry preceded her in death on February 12, 1998.  She was also preceded in death by her sons James Leo and Roger Joseph Malburg, and her sisters  Marie Henion, Louise LeLugas, and Frances Andrieansen. Clara was a life member of St. Jerome’s Catholic Church, and currently St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and enjoyed working in her garden, watching the many birds that frequented her yard, dancing with Henry, deer hunting and snowmobiling.  Her greatest joy was as a wife, mother, and grandmother caring for her family, making a wonderful home, and working alongside her husband on the farm. Carol Virginia Goff aged 91 of Scottville passed away on December 25, 2014 at Tendercare of Ludington. Carol was born on December 25, 1923 in Chicago, the daughter of Arnold A. and Edna R. (Freeman) Andersen, and moved to Sherman Township, Mason County in 1931. She attended Lincoln River School and graduated from Scottville High School with the class of 1941. Carol furthered her education at Davenport McLaughlin Business School and Grand Rapids Junior College earning an Associate’s Degree. She enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in 1944, where she served her country during World War II at Cherry Point, North Carolina Air Station as a secretary. Upon her discharge in 1946, Carol had earned the rating of Sergeant. When Carol returned home from her service, she met Charles R. Goff, also a veteran from Custer, and they married on April 26, 1947 and celebrated 64 years together before Charles preceded her in death in 2011. Louis B. Jansen, aged 59 of Scottville, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at his home.  Louis was born on January 11, 1955 at the Paulina Stearns Hospital in Ludington, the son of Alfonse and Martha (Edel) Jansen, and graduated from Mason County Central High School with the class of 1973.  He furthered his education at Muskegon Community College earning an Associate’s Degree in Architectural Design in 1975.  Louis worked alongside his parents and brothers on their farm in Eden Township, but he also worked at White Pine Village, with his friend Gary Gould at Ludington Carpet Cleaning, and most recently in maintenance for Barothy Lodge.  He loved working on the family farm and also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and following NASCAR.  Louis was preceded in death by his father Alfonse. He will be greatly missed by his mother Martha Jansen, his brothers Charles and Carl Jansen, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Larry D. Austin aged 67, of Free Soil, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Mercy General Health Partners in Muskegon following a very brief illness.  Larry was born on August 21, 1947 in Ludington, and was the son of Don and Nellie Butler of Scottville.  He graduated fromMason County Central High School with the class of l965, and furthered his education at Eastern Michigan University and Northwestern College, before going to work for Mason County Cold Storage.  He retired from Cold Storage after nearly 40 years of working there. Larry had a passion for boating and spent many summers helping out in the charter fishing circles.  He would describe the perfect day as “grilling a great steak, listening to Beach Boys music, and spending time on the water with his family and friends.” Larry will be greatly missed by his lifelong friend and companion, Lynnette (Lynn Langfeldt) Delaney of Grand Rapids; Lynn’s daughters, Kristin (David) Quinn and family of Scottville, and Tina Delaney of Grand Rapids; his neighbor and close friend, Ron Stimes of Freesoil; and many other friends he met along the way. Russell Frederick Williams aged 95 of Walhalla passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Oakview Medical Care Facility in Ludington. Russ was born on February 13, 1919 in Mt. Carmel, Illinois to F. Earl and Sadie Edith (Winkler) Williams, and graduated from Rochester, IN High School in 1936.  Following his graduation he worked various jobs before answering the call of his country and entering the military in 1941.  He eventually became a flight instructor in the U.S. Army Air Corps, teaching pilots to fly by instruments.  On August 16, 1942 he married Evelyn Arvella Enyart in Phenix City, AL and they celebrated 66 years together before Evelyn preceded him in death in 2008.  Following his discharge from the military in 1944, Russ and Evelyn moved to Walhalla where he worked 13 years at Star Watch Case in Ludington before becoming caretaker of Watassa, a summer estate on the Pere Marquette River.  Russ worked full-time at the ranch until 1984, easing into retirement by cutting back to part-time status. Russ enjoyed singing and playing the guitar, bowling, playing ping-pong, bird watching, deer hunting, the beauty of wildflowers, and following the Detroit Tigers. Jeannie Smith, 64, passed away January 12, 2015 at her Ludington home with her family by her side. Jeannie was born February 2, 1950 in Ludington, MI. She graduated from Ludington High School in 1968. Jeannie was married to Gary Smith on July 31, 1971. Jeannie was preceded in death by her parents Bernard (Bud) and Eugenia (Jean) Gurzynski, Uncle Eugene (Corky) DeShon and Anthony (Uncle Tony) Gurzynski. Jeannie is survived by her devoted husband of 44 years, Gary Smith; three sons Scott (Denise) Smith, Michael (Sally) Smith and Timothy (Kelli) Smith; four beautiful grandchildren, Caleb, Landon, Gavin and Addyson and her Aunt Margaret DeShon. One of Jeannie’s greatest joys was her extended daycare family. For over 40 years she loved, molded and cared for each and every child that passed thru her doors, treating them like her own.
