Michelle Lea (Lebrun) Michels age 44 of Ann Arbor, formerly of Walhalla, died at her residence on May 15th 2014. Michelle is survived by her two daughters Breanna Faith (Lebrun) Gauthier of Ludington and Jillian Katharina-Joy Mickevich also of Ludington; two brothers Richard (Laura) Lebrun of Ludington and Vincen (Pattie) Lebrun of Comstock Park; two sisters Eva (Brent) Collins of Walhalla and Andrea (Jeff) Metcalf of Vermont; three nieces and eight nephews.  She was preceded in death by her mother Connie Kiaunis of Walhalla; her father Gerald (Jerry) Lebrun of St. Petersburg Florida; and her her step father Joe Kiaunis of Walhalla. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Doris Imogene “Emma” Claypool aged 82 of Scottville, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, May 20, 2014.  Emma was born on July 1, 1931 in Grand Blanc, the daughter of Reuben and Bernice (DeHoff) Potter, graduated from Clarkston High School in 1949, and attended Harper School of Nursing.  She married Robert Arthur Trim, who preceded her in death, and on August 29, 1959, married Melvin Claypool.  They have celebrated 54 blessed years together.  Emma was also preceded in death by her stepson Dick Claypool. Emma enjoyed many hobbies through the years including gardening, antiquing, music and reading; but the constant joy and delight for Emma was her devotion and love for the Lord Jesus and her family.  She was a faithful member of Victory Baptist Church and enjoyed studying her Bible, praying for and spending time with her wonderful family and friends whom she loved so dearly. Walter Frankie Allen “Frank” Powers of Free Soil passed away at home with his family on May 20, 2014 at the age of 42 after a courageous battle with cancer. Frank was born in Ludington on February 11, 1972, and graduated from Free Soil High School in 1990.  He went on to become an excellent carpenter and later worked at PCA. Frank was an avid outdoors man who enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his children. His family and friends will truly miss his quick wit and sarcasm. He was the very devoted and loving father of Aaron and Brittany Powers, Mickayla Powers, and Nathaniel Powers and will be greatly missed by his children.  He was preceded in death by his Grandmother Althea Beyers, and his Step Father Leonard Ward. Along with his children, Frank will be lovingly remembered by his mother Karen C. Ward of Manistee, his brother Lee Sheafor, his aunts Vicki (Larry) Antoine of Battle Creek, and Sandra Kane of Coral, MI, and special family and friends Ronald and Thelma Chappel, and Ronald and Tracy Chappel all of Freesoil. Doris Jean Cools, 88, of Holt, passed away on Mother’s Day, May 11, 2014.  Jean Wigginton was raised in Lincoln Park, Michigan with five brothers and sisters.  She graduated from Lincoln Park High School where she’d met the love of her life, Dale Cools.  Jean worked as a tutor in the Trenton Schools, and aided countless students to succeed – both in school and in life.  She enjoyed oil painting, cooking for her family, and she loved her home. She was preceded in death by husband, Dale, and four siblings.  Jean is survived by her children Gayle (Ric) Altobellis, Gary (Judy) Cools, Janet (Rick) Zarebski, and Brian Cools, 6 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and many loving nieces, nephews, and in-laws.  Also surviving is her dear sister Donna Morcom.  Cremation has taken place; Celebration of Life will be held this summer.  Memorials to American Cancer Society or National Kidney Foundation.

Marion Joseph “Tye” Tykoski, age 90 of Manistee, Michigan died at his home on Sunday, May 25, 2014 after a battle with cancer. He was born on November 17, 1923 in Manistee, Michigan, son of the late Nick and Martha (Rozga) Tyczkowski. He was a veteran, serving in the United States Army during World War II, from February 24, 1943 until March 30, 1946. Shortly after his release from the Army, Marion attended Neon Sign College in Chicago, Illinois and then returned to Manistee, starting his sign business, “Tye’s Neon Signs”, which he continued to work at until his recent illness. Tye married Lois (Yeck) at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Custer, Michigan on July 18, 1953. She preceded him in death on February 27, 2013. He was a member of the Catholic Community of Manistee (Saint Joseph Parish). Marilyn (Jean) Morse age 82 passed away on May 28, 2014 at Autumn Winds AFC Home. She was born July 21, 1931 in Battle Creek, MI the daughter of the late Leslie Wordon and Margaret (Pierce). Jean spoke of many memories of her childhood, especially the time she spent on her grandparent’s farm. Jean was married at the age of 18 and moved to the Walhalla area where she raised her family and attended adult education classes at Mason County Central, receiving her diploma in June of 1977. She had a real love for the game of baseball and rarely missed watching a Tigers game. Jean played short stop on a woman’s softball league for many years and was considered a valuable team member, winning many state championships. Jean also enjoyed a good game of cards, doing word search puzzles, listening to country music and watching old western movies. In the late 80’s she returned to Athens, MI, where she was a long time member of the Sonoma Methodist Church. Jean retired from Western Michigan University in 1996 where she worked as a cook. Judith K. Schoenherr, aged 67 of Baldwin passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital in East Grand Rapids.  Judy was born on July 13, 1946 in Ludington, the daughter of Fred W. and Gladys M. (Wright) Schoenherr, graduated from Mason County Eastern High School with the class of 1965, and earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Western Michigan University in 1969.  Judy taught English at Baldwin Middle School for 30 years, retiring in 1999. She loved being outdoors, working in her many flower gardens, or hunting for rare finds collecting antiques.  She loved her pets and cared for many cats and dogs through the years including her current cats Henry and Gracie, and her border collie Rosie. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Fred “Skip” Schoenherr, and her sister Bette Johnson.  She will be greatly missed by her brother Theodore Schoenherr and his wife Mary of Custer, her sister Sally Johnston and her husband Al of Reed City, her best friend Linda Cox of Baldwin, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Susan Grace Rader, age 69 of Ludington went to be with the Lord on May 29, 2014 at home surrounded by her family.  She was born October 11, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of the late Carl and Mildred (Zimmerman) Moberg.  Sue attended Mason County Central Schools in Scottville graduating with the class of 1963.  She married Daniel R. Rader on September 26, 1964 in Ludington at the Victory Trinity Lutheran Church.  Sue was a homemaker and also a bank teller at First of America Bank in Ludington.  She was a member of New Hope God’s House of Prayer in Sheridan Township. Sue enjoyed reading, spending time with her family, traveling, gardening, hiking, crafts, antiquing and missionary work.  Together Sue and her husband Dan raised 6 children along with many foster children.  She was a Sundayschool teacher for many years at Victory Trinity Lutheran Church and later at New Hope God’s House of Prayer.   Sue was an ordained Pastor through Faith Alive Bible Training Center and she was involved in missionary work and made numerous trips to Jamaica, Africa and St. Vincent. Helen M. Roeder, aged 98 of Scottville, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Oakview Medical Care Facility.  Helen was born north of Scottville on October 26, 1915, the daughter of Hilding and Freda (Beyer) Swanson, and graduated from Scottville High School with the class of 1933.  She later married Ernest Roeder in Muskegon, and they celebrated many years together until Ernest preceded her in death in 1980.  Helen was also preceded in death by her parents, her son Edward Ernest Roeder in 1957, her grandson James Edward Evans in 2007, and her brother Carl Swanson. Helen worked at various companies throughout the Mason County area including Star Watch Case, and Lidtke’s until her retirement.  For many years Helen was very active with her church, teaching Sunday School, cooking at social functions, and volunteering wherever necessary.  She also loved to quilt and sew.   Family became very important in her late years, especially her granddaughter Lesa Kazlauskas who was her beloved caregiver. Rex Edward Thomsen aged 61 of Scottville died suddenly on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at his home.  Rex was born on October 17, 1952 in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Eggert A. and Alberta L. (Kaskadden) Thomsen, and served his country during the Vietnam Conflict with the United States Marine Corps.  While in the Corps, he served as a drill instructor, a role in which he took a lot of pride.  On February 17, 1973 he married Sharon Buffenbarger in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and they have celebrated 41 years by each other’s side.  After the service, Rex worked for his father with Mid States Real Estate and for Newell Public Schools in Iowa, before moving to Scottville where he worked in the accounting office for Stokely’s Cannery.  Rex enjoyed woodworking, especially fretwork and building birdhouses, and also liked to spend time deer hunting, fishing, camping, and working in his gardens. A die hard Iowa Hawkeye fan, he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on and show his true colors.  He also liked to follow the Tigers and Lions, and loved watching classic western John Wayne movies. Marie Ann Sanborn, age 69 of Ludington, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, June 8, 2014.  Marie was born on September 8, 1944 in North Judson, Indiana to Emil and Sophie (Skowronski) Wolfe.  She was baptized and made her first communion at St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in North Judson.  At the age of 10, her family moved to Custer where her parents bought a farm.  Marie attended and graduated from Mason County Eastern High School with the class of 1962.  During her high school days, she worked at Tony’s Restaurant in Custer and later at Star Watch Case in Ludington where she met her future husband Edward Sanborn.  They married on June 26, 1965 and have celebrated 49 blessed years together.  They moved to the Hamlin area of Ludington, where they raised their family and were active members of Sacred Heart Church until it closed.  Marie held all the offices of the Altar Society at Sacred Heart.  They joined St. Simon’s Catholic Church in Ludington where Marie was a Catholic Daughter and held various offices of the court.  She was an active member and volunteer of St. Simon’s working at many sauerkraut suppers and attending […]

A Memorial Service will be held for Donna (Draper) Hinkley at 11:00 am on Monday, June 16 at the Scottville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Alfred P. Petersen, aged 99 of Free Soil, passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at his home.  Alfred was born on May 28, 1915 in Holton Township of Muskegon County to John and Antonia (Tomasek) Petersen, and married Eva Gajeski on September 30, 1944 at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Free Soil.  They have celebrated 69 blessed years together.  Alfred farmed in Victory Township for 69 years and remained very active in the community until recently. Richard Skrodenis, Age 73 of Scottville died Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Spectrum Health – Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids. He was born on July 10, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois the son of the late John and Ann (Polacek) Strodenis.  He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Vietnam Era.  He married Donna Elaine Toms on June 18, 1966 in Roselle, Illinois. Richard was employed as an inspector at Howmet Turbine Componets  in Whitehall for over 25 years.  He enjoyed woodworking, deer hunting, and watching the Food Network. He is survived by his wife;  Elaine Skrodenis of Scottville, two sons; Richard G. (Emily) Skrodenis of Ionia, MI and Roberst S. (Molly) Skrodenis of Louisville, KY, three grandchildren; Caitlin, Parker, & Liam, as well as nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by one brother; Robert J. Luise Frieda Schmidt, age 76, of Reed City passed away at the Autumn Winds AFC, Ludington on Friday evening, July 4, 2014, following the recent diagnosis of a terminal illness.  Luise was born December 5, 1937, the daughter of Robert and Hedwig Brummer of Nicklashausen in the District Tauberbischofsheim, Germany. On January 16, 1961, Luise married Kenneth Schmidt, a United States Army Staff Sergeant stationed in Germany. He preceded her in death on December 4, 2010. Luise was employed at Evart Products in Evart for 25 years, retiring in 2000.  She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, the outdoors and was quite skilled in harvesting deer with her own M-1 service rifle.  Luise is survived by her two daughters Ingrid (David) Herweyer of Vogel Center, Judy (Tommy) Lemire of Scottville, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, her brother Helmut (Ingeborg) Brummer of Frankfurt, Germany, her sister Irmgard (Eric) Erne of Berne, Switzerland, her brother-in-law Arthur (Janet) Schmidt of Hersey, and her sister-in-law Mary (Rex) Eastman of Evart, Michigan.  She was preceded her in death by her sister Getta and husband Helmut in Germany, her brothers-in-law William, Don, Lyle, and Robert Schmidt, her grandson Richard Herweyer and granddaughter Michelle Schmidt. Helen M. Tyndall aged 90 of Ludington passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Ludington Woods Living Center. Helen was born on December 8, 1923 in Carr Settlement, the daughter of Perry and Ida (Miller) Tyndall, and graduated from Custer High School in 1942.  She furthered her education at County Normal School and began teaching at Malboro and Lake Schools until 1947 when she attended Central Michigan Teachers College in Mt. Pleasant and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1949.  Helen put all of her energy into teaching for 33 years, the last 24 years for Ludington Public Schools.  She absolutely loved children.  In 1978, due to health reasons, she moved to Tucson, AZ and worked part-time for Child Protective Services, and volunteered at Craigen School. She continued to spend her summers in Michigan, and moved back to Michigan for good in 2002. Helen was a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, and attended Grace and Truth Chapel in Baldwin.  Her faith in God and the Lord Jesus Christ were strong.  Now she awaits the “shout of command and the trumpet of God” when the dead in Christ shall rise. Jon L Saxton was born on July 19, 1942 in rural Mason County, the only child of Orvan & Nondes (Leedy) Saxton. His parents owned a farm in Riverton Township where he grew up and attended East Riverton School.  As a teenager, he attended Mason County Central Schools in Scottville, participating in football, and track, as well as playing trumpet in band and graduating with the Class of 1960. During his high school and college years, Jon L worked at Briggs Hardware in Scottville alongside his parents, who managed the store.  Following high school, he attended Central Michigan University, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in 1964. During his college years and for a time after, he continued to help out his parents at Briggs, and also worked part-time for WKLA Radio in the area of advertising. Melissa Sue Fralic, aged 33 of Hart, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 2, 2014 with her loving family by her side.  Melissa was born on March 10, 1981 in Manistee, the daughter of Melvin and Linda (Wresinski) Kruse, and graduated from Manistee High School with the class of 1999.  She attended Central Michigan University, earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education in 2004, and furthered her education by completing her Masters Degree in Reading from Western Michigan University in 2010.  On June 18, 2005, she married Mark W. Fralic in Manistee, and they cherished every moment together. Melissa began her teaching career for the Benzie County Central Schools, before moving to Hart Public Schools where she has taught Kindergarten, Head Start, and GSRP the past 9 years.  She and Mark were active members of Mason County Reformed Church in Scottville, serving as Life Group leaders, and she was also a member of the Association for the Education of Young Children (AEYC).  Melissa loved to spend her free time kayaking, going on hikes, and scrapbooking, but her greatest joy came in the presence of her beloved family and friends. Anna Rose Miskevics, aged 98 of Chicago, Illinois, former resident of Irons, passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 in Chicago. Anna was born on March 12, 1916 in Irons, the daughter of John and Amelia (Kaminskis) Wolukonis, and married Constantine Miskevics in 1940 at St. Bernard Catholic Church. They celebrated 44 years together before Constantine preceded her in death in 1984. Anna was also preceded in death by her parents. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons Andrew (Jo Anne) Forrester, Martin Miskevics, and Arthur (Shirley) Miskevics all of Illinois, 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 2 great, great-grandchildren, her sisters Julia and Lillian, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Anna at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 19 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Irons with Rev. Dennis O’Donnell as celebrant. Roger Dean Barnard, age 68 of Traverse City, former resident of Ludington passed away peacefully on Friday, August 22, 2014 at the Munson Hospice House.  Roger was born on December 30, 1945 in Saginaw, the son of Harry and Ella Barnard.  After the birth of his sister Lois, the family moved to Scottville in 1949 where he was raised and graduated from Mason County Central High School with the class of 1964.  Roger furthered his education earning his teaching degree from Michigan State University in 1969, and began his 30 year career in teaching with the Detroit Public Schools.  The following year, he began teaching for the Ludington Area Schools, retiring in 1999 after 29 years of service to the district.  Roger also earned his Master’s Degree from Central Michigan University in 1979. In addition to his passion for teaching, Roger also had a deep love for music.  This love was manifested in his loyalty and enjoyment in practicing and performing in the big band sound of The General Assembly.  At the time of his passing, Roger was the longest, living, continuous member of The General Assembly having started with the big band in 1970.  Roger was also a member of the Scottville Clown Band and enjoyed attending […]
